May 3rd - 12 hours to go !
Its hard to believe 18 months in the planning, and its now down to less than 12 hours to go! This time tomorrow the Desert Mums will be sitting on the red sand staring at the stars – or actually more likely snoring their heads off after all the running around they have been doing preparing for this journey. Here is another update.
The Tally
The Desert Mums aim to raise $105,000 to fund a three year research program through the National Breast Cancer Foundation. They are happy to report that their tally stands at around $102,000. Oh so very very close!
Please join their journey tell your friends that The Desert Mums have millions of steps ahead of them, they have only one – log on to the website www.desertmums.com and make a donation or pledge. Alternatively log onto the NBCF website and have a guess how many steps it will take to walk across the Desert and win some fantastic prizes.

The Walk Here is a map of the journey the mums will make. Alice Springs Aero Club have donated their time and will fly the mums to Dalhousie Springs. On Friday the mums will be driven to the first sand dune of the Simpson Desert where their walk will commence. |
The Phone Numbers
The Desert Mums have a Satellite phone with them throughout their journey so if you feel like a chat call after 5pm on 0145 124 654.
The Mums
The last week has been pretty full on for the mums, with last minute planning, driving around and organizing those last few things. All of them are eager to just start walking.
A TV appearance for Sue and Deb, radio and newspaper interviews for all have meant the Desert Mums have been able to get their message about ‘breast awareness’ and how to donate via their website out to thousands of people.
After many months of sleepless nights tossing and turning and sneaking out of bed to send just one more email the time has finally come for the desert mums to hit the desert and just walk.
They couldn’t have done it without the support of their family, friends and corporate partners. The good byes to the children have been tough its been said all along walking across the desert will be easy compared to the emotional trauma of leaving the children. The kids will be fine, we have faith in their fathers – but how will the mums cope? But all the mums need do is remind themselves of why they are doing this and suddenly everything is put into perspective.
To every one who has helped in any way shape or form for this journey – THANK YOU from the Desert Mums. The journey is not over yet – it is just about to begin.
Stay tuned….
